Ragnarök
B&B poem #8
They cut down the world tree to make room for a shopping mall. "The best deals this side of Jötunheimr" the billboard proudly reads; and these days the all-father spends his time feeding birds in the parking lot. "I, for one, am all for progress, but," he opines, "back in my day they'd've gladly ripped your lungs from your backside for half of what these kids take for granted." He sighs then walks into the Ikea and orders a pound of meatballs. He grabs one between his finger and thumb and raises it to his eye. Seeming to see everything and nothing at the same time. The history of man plays out before him in greed and bloodshed. The ravens sit on his shoulders, staring at the meatball and feigning starvation as the sun darkens and the snow begins to fall.

I normally select older artwork and don’t add much context, but since Holm is a living artist I thought I’d point everyone towards his website. He’s an anarchist who does interesting drawings and is an adamant proponent the creative commons. He posts a lot of videos about his process online and he just has a pretty cool vibe! Definitely check him out!

"They cut down
the World Tree...
To make room
for a shopping mall."
"The All-Father...
Feeding birds
in the parking lot."
Myth has a curious way
of surviving...
Even after we've paved over
the places
where it once lived.
Wry. Inventive. Wonderfully original! I'M SUBSCRIBING!
